Alake Re-elected Chairman of Africa Minerals Strategy Group

Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has been re-elected as Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG), reaffirming his leadership role in shaping the continent’s collective approach to mineral development.

Alake announced his re-election in a post on X on Monday, noting that he was returned unopposed at the group’s 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Riyadh. He was first elected to the position in 2024 during the Future Minerals Forum, also hosted in Saudi Arabia. I’m grateful to my fellow ministers for the trust they’ve shown in me again,” Alake said, describing the renewed mandate as a responsibility to deepen cooperation among African mineral-producing countries. According to the minister, the AMSG also adopted a stronger and more inclusive leadership structure that reflects Africa’s regional diversity, a move he said was necessary to ensure balance and effectiveness within the platform. Alake stressed that his priority remains ensuring that African countries work together to derive real value from their mineral resources, rather than operating in isolation. He highlighted the need for member states to agree on basic financial contributions, strengthen accountability mechanisms, and establish a clear budgetary framework to enhance the group’s credibility and operational capacity. Beyond governance reforms, the Nigerian minister cautioned that mineral wealth alone would not automatically translate into economic transformation for African countries. Minerals alone won’t transform our economies,” he said, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure development, policy alignment, and deliberate value addition across the mineral value chain. He added that the critical task ahead lies in designing financing and governance frameworks capable of attracting investment while supporting long-term growth, stability, and shared prosperity across the continent. The Africa Minerals Strategy Group brings together ministers responsible for solid minerals from across Africa, with the aim of coordinating strategies, strengthening Africa’s bargaining power in global mineral markets, and promoting sustainable development of the continent’s vast mineral resources.
