Police Recover Suspected Human Remains on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, Arrest Driver
Operatives of the Federal Highway Patrol on Sunday intercepted a commercial vehicle along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Oyo State and recovered items suspected to be parts of a human corpse, concealed among passengers’ luggage, leading to the arrest of the driver.
The discovery was made near Guru Maharaji Village during a routine stop-and-search operation carried out by officers monitoring the busy highway. The vehicle’s driver, identified as Kazeem Ayegbo, was travelling from Lagos to Osogbo when the suspicious items were uncovered.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, explained that the remains were wrapped in a red cloth and hidden among other personal belongings inside the vehicle.
The statement partly read, “Operatives of the Federal Highway Patrol intercepted a commercial vehicle during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Guru Maharaji Village.
“A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a red cloth containing bones and other items suspected to be parts of a human corpse, concealed among the luggage.
“The driver, Kazeem Ayegbo (male), travelling from Lagos to Osogbo, was apprehended. Investigation has commenced to determine the origin and intended purpose of the recovered items, with investigative efforts extended beyond Oyo State to identify and apprehend all persons connected with the incident.”
Police authorities stated that a detailed investigation had already begun to establish how the items came to be in the vehicle and who might be connected to them.
According to the command, the suspect will be charged to court once inquiries are completed.
The police assured residents that the matter was being treated with seriousness and professionalism. The command reiterated its commitment to public safety and called on citizens to continue supporting law enforcement with useful information that could aid investigations.
In a related development, the Oyo State Police Command also confirmed a separate suspected murder case that occurred at a construction site in the Iyana-Ajia area of Ibadan.
Osifeso disclosed that the incident was reported at the Akanran Police Division after a dispute between two casual workers turned violent.
He said, “During the altercation, Lawal Ibrahim (male), aged 22, allegedly stabbed Raimi Ige (male), aged 18, with a broken bottle, inflicting fatal injuries. The victim later succumbed while being conveyed to the hospital.
“The suspect was arrested, and the corpse was deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
“Given the nature of the offence, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for discreet investigation, after which the suspect will be charged in court accordingly.”
The police command encouraged members of the public to promptly report emergencies and suspicious activities through the Oyo State Call Response Centre toll-free lines, stressing that cooperation between citizens and security agencies remains essential for maintaining peace and order in the state.
