Electrical Surge Sparks Fire in Abuja Plaza as Fire Service Saves N900m Property

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) on Sunday successfully contained a fire incident at Leventis Plaza in Abuja, preventing the blaze from spreading to other parts of the commercial complex and neighboring structures.

The fire, which affected a tailoring workshop on the first floor of the plaza, is suspected to have been caused by an electrical surge.

No casualties were reported.

According to the Federal Fire Service, firefighters from its Special Unit at the National Headquarters were dispatched immediately after an emergency call was received.

The team, led by SF Adoko, arrived at the scene within five minutes and swiftly brought the fire under control.

Firefighters carried out suppression, salvage, and overhaul operations, followed by a detailed inspection of the affected area to prevent reoccurrence.

Their intervention protected property valued at about N900 million out of an estimated N1 billion at risk before the incident.

The prompt response also prevented the fire from spreading to nearby commercial facilities, including Grand Square, The Palm Hotels and Frazier’s Suites.

The Federal Fire Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country and urged residents and business owners to ensure proper electrical installations to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.

The statement was signed by DCF P.O. Abraham, National PRO and Head of Corporate Services, Federal Fire Service and dated January 18, 2026.
