Firefighters Contain Kugbo Furniture Market Inferno, Save N1.8bn Property

The Federal Fire Service (FFS), in collaboration with other emergency responders, have contained a major fire outbreak at the Kugbo Furniture Market in Abuja, preventing further escalation and saving properties valued at an estimated ₦1.8 billion.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday at the furniture market, one of the largest commercial hubs in the Federal Capital Territory.

The blaze, suspected to have been caused by an electrical surge, had the potential to spread rapidly due to the nature of materials stored in the market.

A distress call was received at the Federal Fire Service Control Room at about 8:37 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from the Special Unit of the National Headquarters.

Two high-powered ground monitor appliances were dispatched from the headquarters, while an additional firefighting unit responded from the Nyanya Fire Station. The FCT Fire Service also joined in the response.

Firefighters from both services battled the inferno for more than three hours before bringing it under control. Their coordinated intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining areas of the market.

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service commended the firefighters for their professionalism and gallantry, stressing the importance of early emergency alerts. He urged residents to promptly notify emergency services when incidents occur, noting that early reporting significantly reduces losses.

He also appreciated the FCT Fire Service for its collaboration in joint emergency response efforts aimed at saving lives and property.

The Federal Fire Service further appealed to the public to familiarise themselves with emergency contact numbers for swift response during crises.

The statement was signed by DCF P.O. Abraham, National PRO and Head of Corporate Services, Federal Fire Service, and dated January 18, 2026.
