Trump Links Greenland Control to U.S. Missile Defence Ambitions

President Donald Trump on Wednesday renewed his push for the United States to assume control of Greenland, framing the Arctic island as a strategic necessity for America’s evolving missile defence architecture and broader security interests.

In a social media post issued ahead of key diplomatic engagements at the White House, Trump argued that Greenland plays a central role in his proposed “Golden Dome” air and missile defence system.

“The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building,” he wrote.

The president further suggested that U.S. ownership of the territory would significantly strengthen the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, insisting that “NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable.”

Trump also stressed that NATO should take a leading role in developing the missile defence framework, warning that inaction could allow rival global powers to gain influence in the region. “IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” he added.

The comments came on the same day senior Danish and Greenlandic officials were expected at the White House for discussions with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with Greenland’s security and geopolitical importance high on the agenda.

Ahead of the talks, Denmark sought to reassure Washington of its commitment to Arctic security.

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the country was increasing its military footprint in Greenland and was working with allies to expand NATO’s presence in the region.

Despite these assurances, Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in taking control of the vast and sparsely populated island, which sits at a strategic crossroads between North America and Europe.

His renewed confidence follows recent U.S. military actions abroad, which have further highlighted his administration’s assertive foreign policy posture.

As diplomatic engagements continue, Greenland remains a growing focal point in international defence planning, with its location and security relevance placing it at the center of rising global competition in the Arctic.
