Nigeria Needs Active Citizens, Not Passive Graduates, Says Dr. Obafemi Hamzat

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has emphasized that Nigeria requires “active citizens” rather than “passive graduates” to address its national challenges.

Speaking at the 15th Convocation lecture of Fountain University in Osogbo, he urged young school leavers to transition from being job seekers to becoming “architects of solutions.”

Represented by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Layode Olanrewaju, Hamzat noted that many graduates currently fall short of modern labor market demands.

He encouraged the graduating class to utilize the specialized knowledge and critical thinking skills provided by their university to actively shape the country’s shared future.

Beyond academic intelligence, the Deputy Governor stressed the importance of cultivating wisdom and compassion.

He advised the students to maintain a positive mindset and continuously re-evaluate their ideas to effectively navigate the realities and professional encounters they will face after graduation.

The event also featured a lecture by Kazeem Adeduntan, who called on Islamic scholars to evolve from mosque custodians into economic architects.

He described the global Muslim community as a “sleeping giant” that needs leadership, innovation, and economic empowerment to achieve true prosperity.
