FG Slams Contractors over Slow Work on Lokoja – Abuja Highway

The Federal Government has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work on the Lokoja–Abuja highway, warning contractors of potential sanctions. During a recent inspection tour in Kogi State, Abiodun Essiet, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, described the progress on key sections as far below expectations.
Despite previous directives from the Minister of Works to accelerate construction and deploy more equipment, several contractors remain behind schedule. The government noted that only a few months remain before the project’s delivery deadline, yet the level of work completed does not align with the agreed timelines.
Project managers on-site reportedly admitted to the delays, though some cited funding challenges as a primary constraint.
However, the Presidency rejected these excuses, insisting that contracts were awarded based on proven financial capacity and that the “Renewed Hope” intervention funds are available to meet obligations.
The government has warned that it will not hesitate to terminate underperforming contracts, similar to the four road projects already revoked in the state.
To ensure the highway is completed on time, the Ministry of Works has been urged to strengthen its supervision and enforcement of all ongoing projects.
