Gusau Dismisses Officiating Bias Fears Ahead of Super Eagles’ AFCON Semi-Final Against Morocco

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has played down concerns over possible biased officiating ahead of the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final clash with host nation Morocco.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Gusau said he is not worried about claims that match officials could favour Morocco because they are playing on home soil. He stressed that referees appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are professionals who understand the weight of their responsibility at the continent’s biggest football tournament. According to the NFF boss, the AFCON is being watched globally, and CAF is aware that any form of unfair officiating would damage the credibility of the competition. He expressed confidence that officials assigned to the match would perform their duties impartially and in line with the laws of the game. Gusau also referenced Nigeria’s recent experiences at CAF competitions hosted in Morocco, noting that officiating in previous high-profile matches involving Nigerian teams had been handled fairly. He insisted that there is “nothing to fear,” adding that focus should remain on preparation and performance rather than external distractions. Concerns about refereeing have been a recurring topic at the ongoing AFCON, with fans and analysts across the continent questioning some decisions in earlier matches. CAF has, however, taken steps to address officiating standards during the tournament, reinforcing scrutiny and accountability for match officials. Meanwhile, the Super Eagles have remained confident in camp as they prepare for the semi-final, with players and officials emphasizing discipline, concentration and belief in their ability to overcome the Atlas Lions. The Nigeria–Morocco clash is expected to be one of the most intense matches of the tournament, as both sides battle for a place in the AFCON final, with Gusau urging Nigerians to trust the process and support the team.
