Rivers Assembly Commence Impeachment Proceedings Against Fubara, Deputy
Impeachment processes have been set in motion against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, following actions taken by the State House of Assembly on Thursday.
The development occurred during a plenary session led by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, where lawmakers formally activated constitutional procedures to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.
The proceedings were aired live on Channels Television.
During the sitting, the Majority Leader of the House, Major Jack, presented a notice detailing allegations against Fubara. The notice, which was endorsed by 26 members of the Assembly, accused the governor of actions considered to be in violation of the Nigerian Constitution.
Speaker Amaewhule disclosed that the notice would be formally transmitted to Governor Fubara within the next seven days, in line with legislative requirements governing impeachment processes.
In a related development, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read a separate notice outlining allegations of gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Oduh, thereby extending the impeachment proceedings to the state’s second-highest executive office.
The commencement of the dual impeachment process signals a significant escalation in political tensions within Rivers State, as attention now shifts to the governor’s response and the next steps outlined by constitutional provisions.
