The Labour Party has officially responded to the departure of Peter Obi and several followers to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh described the move as a long-overdue development that has “finally liberated” the party from internal friction.
The party’s leadership expressed little surprise at the move, claiming they had effectively parted ways with Obi in late 2024.
Ifoh remarked: “For us in Labour Party, we wondered why it took them this long to make the move… The party is finally liberated by this defection and as Party leaders, we count it as a blessing.”
The statement also directed sharp criticism toward Obi’s defection speech in Enugu, labeling it “lackluster” and questioning his future political agenda. Furthermore, the party accused Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti of previously orchestrating an internal rebellion against the leadership of Julius Abure.
The party dismissed the significance of the Enugu event, noting that it was ignored by major political and traditional institutions in the South East.
They argued this lack of support serves as a “danger signal” that Obi’s future political aspirations may already be failing.
In a candid conclusion, the Labour Party apologized to Nigerians for its role in the 2023 elections. The statement admitted:
“We gave Nigerians a candidate we thought was good for the nation in 2023, but time has since proved that we made the greatest political mistake. We plead for forgiveness from Nigerians.”
