Ogun Govt Deploys Waste Teams, Warns Traders Ahead of Yuletide Rush

The Ogun State Government has intensified environmental sanitation efforts across the state as part of measures to ensure a clean and safe atmosphere during the Yuletide celebrations.

Speaking in Abeokuta on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, said the government had activated special end-of-year operations to manage the anticipated surge in waste generation associated with the festive season.

He made this known while extending Christmas goodwill to residents and visitors, alongside best wishes for a prosperous 2026.

According to the commissioner, all Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators have been directed to operate continuously throughout the holidays, ensuring timely evacuation of refuse from residential and commercial areas.

He noted that residents are expected to support the initiative by keeping their surroundings clean and storing refuse properly in covered bins for easy collection.

To reinforce the effort, Oresanya disclosed that government-owned waste management equipment, supported by environmental health officials, has been fully deployed across the state.

He explained that the move is designed to complement PSP operations and sustain the clean image Ogun State is known for, even during periods of increased social activity.

He assured both residents and visitors that the state government remains committed to environmental cleanliness but stressed that public cooperation is essential for the success of the operation.

The commissioner also turned attention to commercial activities, particularly in markets and supermarkets, where trading is expected to peak during the festive period.

He instructed traders to maintain hygienic business environments and cautioned against street trading, warning that Environment Marshals would be actively enforcing compliance with existing regulations.

Special warnings were issued to what he described as “emergency traders” who display livestock and other goods on roadsides, medians, and inside vehicles. Oresanya directed such traders to relocate to designated markets, stating that adequate space has been provided.

He warned that violators risk having their goods confiscated and being assigned community service for breaching environmental laws and defacing the state’s outlook.

In addition, motorists were advised to exercise caution on the roads to avoid accidents, as street sweepers will remain on duty throughout the season to keep highways clean.

The commissioner also cautioned carnival and event organisers against blocking public roads for celebrations, reminding them that such actions contravene the state’s environmental regulations.

The government, he said, remains focused on balancing festive enjoyment with public safety, cleanliness, and order across Ogun State.
