FG Declares December 25, 26, January 1 Public Holidays

The Federal Government has declared December 25 and 26, 2025, as well as January 1, 2026 as public holidays to commemorate Christmas, Boxing Day and the New Year.

The declaration was made on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

According to the announcement, the holidays are intended to allow Nigerians to observe the end-of-year festivities and usher in the new year in an atmosphere of reflection and celebration.

Dr Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to draw inspiration from the message of Christmas by embracing virtues such as love, peace, humility and sacrifice, which he described as essential for fostering unity and peaceful coexistence in the country.

The minister also called on citizens across religious and ethnic lines to use the festive season as a period of prayer for national peace, improved security and sustained development, while supporting government efforts aimed at strengthening cohesion and progress.

He further advised Nigerians to conduct themselves responsibly during the celebrations, stressing the need for law-abiding behaviour and heightened security awareness.

Citizens were also encouraged to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a calm and safe holiday period nationwide.

The Federal Government concluded the announcement by extending goodwill messages to Nigerians at home and abroad, wishing them a joyful Christmas celebration and a successful start to the New Year.
