Obienyem Vows to Petition Host Country Against Reno Omokri When Assigned
Barr. Valentine Obienyem, a prominent public commentator and media adviser to 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced his intention to formally petition any country to which Reno Omokri is posted as an ambassador.
Obienyem aims to urge the prospective host government to reject Omokri’s letter of credence, citing “grave concerns” regarding his suitability for diplomatic representation.
In a detailed draft letter made available to journalists, Obienyem chronicled several reasons why he believes the nominee should be disqualified from representing Nigeria on the global stage.
* Instability and Shifting Loyalties: The letter describes Omokri’s conduct as demonstrating a lack of stability and a tendency toward “personal advancement rather than national interest.”
* Previous Attacks on the President: Obienyem highlighted Omokri’s past as an outspoken critic of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He recalled that during the 2023 election cycle, Omokri frequently questioned the President’s fitness for office and mocked his health, famously labeling him a “London patient.”
* Inconsistency in Principles: The petition points out that Omokri previously made public claims regarding the President’s academic records and corruption allegations claims he made “publicly and without caveat.” Obienyem also noted that Omokri had once declared he would never work with Tinubu, stating it was “contrary to his DNA.” “This is not a personal matter, but a question of public responsibility and the integrity of diplomatic representation.” — Barr. Obienyem argues that accepting Omokri as an ambassador could pose a significant risk to bilateral relations between Nigeria and the host nation. He contends that a diplomat must embody consistency and national integrity, qualities he claims are missing in the nominee.
To support his petition, Obienyem stated he is prepared to provide host countries with:
* Documented public statements and social media posts.
* Video evidence of past protests and commentary.
* Links to published articles authored by the nominee attacking the current administration.
Obienyem emphasized that his objection is rooted in public responsibility and that he will follow through with these petitions regardless of which country Omokri is eventually assigned to.
