Akpabio Presses for APC Unity at National Caucus Meeting, Decries Rising Insecurity
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has expressed deep concern over what he termed a deliberate and well-coordinated wave of insecurity afflicting Nigeria, accusing shadowy forces of intentionally destabilising the nation through acts of terrorism, banditry and insurgency.
Akpabio made the remarks on Thursday during the 14th National Caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
Addressing President Bola Tinubu and other senior party leaders, he stressed the need for unity within the ruling party as it continues to attract new members and defectors.
The Senate President cautioned party leaders against exclusion or discrimination, noting that the party’s expansion could breed envy and rivalry, which, if unchecked, might weaken collective efforts to confront Nigeria’s security challenges.
He lamented that the worsening security situation had plunged several states into mourning, assuring President Tinubu of the caucus’ loyalty and prayers as he navigates the difficulties confronting the country.
Akpabio also aligned the caucus with communities and states affected by violent attacks, while commending the President for facilitating the rescue of more than 100 children abducted in recent incidents.
He appealed for intensified efforts to secure the freedom of the remaining captives and ensure their safe return to their families.
He further extended condolences to families who lost loved ones, including members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty while defending lives and property across the country.
On regional matters, Akpabio noted that Nigeria’s peace and security were closely linked to developments in neighbouring countries.
He praised Tinubu’s intervention in Benin Republic aimed at strengthening democratic stability, urging continued diplomatic engagement within the sub-region.
The Senate President also revealed that the National Assembly had adopted firm legislative measures to curb criminal activities.
According to him, the Senate is pushing for kidnapping to be legally classified as an act of terrorism, a move that would attract the death penalty once the proposed legislation receives presidential assent.
