NURTW Endorses Tinubu, Kebbi Governor Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has formally declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, ahead of the 2027 general elections, pledging to mobilise its nationwide membership in backing their political ambitions.

The endorsement was announced on Monday in Birnin Kebbi during a gathering of the union’s national and state leadership, marking one of the earliest organised labour endorsements as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the next election cycle.

Speaking at the event, NURTW National President, Alhaji Najeem Usman-Yasin, said the union’s decision was based on what he described as the visible developmental strides recorded by both the federal and Kebbi State governments.

He praised President Tinubu’s infrastructure drive, particularly ongoing road and transport projects across the country, noting that improved road networks directly benefit transport workers and the wider economy.

Usman-Yasin also commended Governor Nasir Idris for what he called people-oriented policies and consistent engagement with grassroots groups in Kebbi State. According to him, the governor’s performance in areas such as road construction, education, and workers’ welfare justified the union’s continued support.

In his remarks, Governor Idris expressed appreciation to the NURTW for the endorsement, describing it as a vote of confidence in his administration. He stated that his government had fulfilled a substantial portion of the promises made during the 2023 campaign, pointing to improvements in infrastructure, agriculture, and public service delivery across the state.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to completing ongoing projects and sustaining policies aimed at boosting economic activity and improving living standards for residents. He added that the partnership between his administration and organised labour groups such as the NURTW would remain a priority.

The event also featured the inauguration of the newly elected Kebbi State Chairman of the NURTW, Alhaji Garba Dan-Malam, who was sworn in by the union’s national leadership. Awards of recognition were presented to President Tinubu and Governor Idris for their contributions to road development and transport-related infrastructure.

Political observers see the endorsement as part of a broader trend of early mobilisation by interest groups ahead of the 2027 elections, with labour unions and professional associations positioning themselves within the evolving political landscape. While the elections remain over a year away, such declarations are expected to intensify as parties and candidates consolidate support across states and sectors.
