Kyiv, US Teams Hold Talks as Russian Strikes Hit Ukraine
Ukraine and United States officials held new talks on Friday, December 5, even as Russia intensified drone and missile strikes across the country.
The U.S. delegation, including special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, met with Ukraine’s team led by negotiator Rustem Umerov and senior military officials.
The discussions focus on a postwar security framework and potential peace measures.
Meanwhile, Russia launched a large-scale attack involving more than 650 drones and 50 missiles, according to Ukrainian authorities. Most were intercepted by air defenses, but strikes damaged power plants, water facilities, and a railway hub in Fastiv near Kyiv, causing widespread service disruptions and power outages.
Officials said the strikes targeted civilian infrastructure, highlighting the challenges facing ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Analysts warned that continued military attacks while talks proceed could undermine progress.
The U.S. emphasized that meaningful negotiations require Russia to halt aggression, while Ukraine insisted that any agreement must not be forced under duress, especially as winter approaches and essential services remain disrupted.
The international community is closely monitoring the talks, which could shape regional stability, humanitarian conditions, and global energy and food markets.
