Super Eagles Captain William Troost‑Ekong Retires Ahead of AFCON 2025

Nigerian football is entering a new chapter as Super Eagles captain, William Troost‑Ekong has officially retired from international football.

The announcement comes just weeks before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Ekong, who made 83 appearances and scored eight goals for Nigeria, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country.

He said he is stepping aside to allow younger players to take on leadership roles within the team.

His retirement marks the end of a decade-long international career that included significant contributions as team captain and mentorship to younger teammates.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) acknowledged Ekong’s achievements, praising his commitment, professionalism, and dedication to Nigerian football.

His leadership on and off the pitch has been widely recognized, making him one of the most respected figures in the national team’s recent history.

With Ekong no longer in the squad, the Super Eagles will face a transitional period as they prepare for AFCON 2025.

Analysts say the team will need to identify new leaders to maintain cohesion and performance during the tournament. Fans are hopeful that the next generation of players will rise to the challenge and continue Nigeria’s pursuit of football excellence.

Impact on Nigerian Football: Ekong’s retirement signals a shift in the team’s dynamics and underscores the need for strategic planning and leadership development.

His departure leaves a void in experience and leadership, but also presents an opportunity for emerging talents to make their mark on the national stage.
