Two Zamfara Lawmakers Exit APC Amid Rising Intra-Party Friction
Political dynamics in Zamfara State took another turn on Monday as two members of the State House of Assembly announced their resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that underscores the deepening internal discord within the party’s state structure.
The lawmakers, Shamsudeen Hassan Basko representing Talata-Mafara North and Nura Dahiru representing Birnin-Magaji, communicated their decision in separate letters dated December 3.
The correspondence, formally read by Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki during plenary, signaled yet another setback for the APC, which has in recent months struggled to contain factional clashes and leadership disputes.
In his letter, Hassan cited a prolonged climate of division within the party, referencing unresolved disputes, weak leadership coordination, and what he described as a progressive marginalization of several members across state and local government structures.
According to him, remaining within the APC no longer aligned with his political values or the expectations of his constituents.
Dahiru, in his own submission, said his resignation was informed by his desire to champion causes that more accurately reflect the aspirations of the people he represents. Although appreciative of the platform the party once provided, he explained that the evolving political environment required a shift in direction.
Both lawmakers thanked the APC for previous opportunities and urged that their letters be recognized as official documentation of their withdrawal from the party.
Shortly after his exit, Dahiru formally declared his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant step in what analysts view as an emerging wave of political realignments ahead of future electoral cycles in Zamfara.
The Assembly has yet to comment on how the departures might affect legislative balance, though observers believe the development may signal broader instability within the APC’s state chapter.
