China Moves to Implement Zero-Tariff Policy for Nigerian Exports, Says Ambassador Yu

China Moves to Implement Zero-Tariff Policy for Nigerian Exports, Says Ambassador Yu   China has announced its readiness to begin implementing a zero-tariff policy for Nigerian exports, a move expected to significantly boost trade between both countries and open new opportunities for Nigerian producers. The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, revealed the development during a diplomatic engagement in Abuja, stating that Beijing is prepared to activate the tariff-free window “at an early date.” According to him, the policy aligns with China’s commitment to deepen economic cooperation with Nigeria and strengthen longstanding bilateral relations. Ambassador Yu noted that the initiative is part of China’s broader plan to expand duty-free access for African countries, particularly as both nations prepare to commemorate the 55th anniversary of Nigeria-China diplomatic ties and the 2026 China–Africa Year of Cultural Exchanges. He explained that the zero-tariff framework would allow a wide range of Nigerian goods — including agricultural produce, solid minerals, and manufactured products — to enter the Chinese market duty-free once implementation begins. The envoy emphasized that the policy is aimed at promoting mutually beneficial growth, supporting Nigeria’s export diversification efforts, and fostering a more balanced trade relationship. Trade experts say the move could mark a major turning point for Nigerian exporters, who have long faced challenges entering the highly competitive Asian market. However, analysts caution that the full benefits will depend on clear implementation guidelines, product eligibility lists, quality standards, and streamlined customs procedures. The Federal Government is expected to engage further with Chinese authorities to finalize modalities, with stakeholders across agriculture, manufacturing, and mining already expressing optimism that the new window could unlock billions in export opportunities. If successfully executed, the zero-tariff policy could significantly reduce Nigeria’s non-oil export barriers, strengthen foreign exchange inflows, and deepen economic integration between Africa’s largest economy and the world’s second-largest economy. Further announcements on timelines and technical details are expected in the coming weeks as discussions progress between both governments.
