YPP National Executive Committee Affirms Expulsion of Anambra Federal Lawmaker for Alleged Anti-Party Activities

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has formally endorsed the expulsion of Hon. Peter Uzokwe, the member representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, following allegations of persistent actions deemed detrimental to the party’s interests.

The decision, taken by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), marks the conclusion of a disciplinary process initiated several weeks ago.

According to party officials, the sanction was the outcome of extensive deliberations involving the National Working Committee (NWC), state leadership, and the disciplinary arm of the party.

The committees reportedly reviewed petitions and video materials that portrayed the federal lawmaker expressing open support for a political opponent ahead of the Anambra governorship election.

This conduct, the party leadership said, violated established provisions of its constitution regarding loyalty, party cohesion, and collective decision-making.

The controversy intensified after footage circulated showing the legislator addressing supporters at a public event where he allegedly endorsed Governor Chukwuma Soludo and encouraged constituents to rally behind a rival party during the next governorship election. Party executives argued that such a declaration not only undermined YPP’s position in the state but also misrepresented the party’s strategic intentions.

YPP’s spokesperson stated that no individual had the authority to speak on behalf of the party regarding electoral plans, especially claims suggesting that the party would not participate in the coming governorship contest.

The leadership described the lawmaker’s statements as both misleading and injurious to the growth of the party, insisting that disciplinary action became unavoidable after repeated warnings.

In response to his expulsion, the affected legislator appeared in several interviews where he defended his actions. He maintained that his comments reflected political realities within his constituency and argued that he had no intention of sabotaging YPP.

He also expressed dissatisfaction with the manner the party handled the matter, hinting at the possibility of seeking redress.

Political observers note that the development reveals deeper tensions within emerging political parties, especially when local political alliances clash with national directives.

For YPP, which has been attempting to strengthen its national presence, the decision is seen as part of a broader effort to reinforce internal discipline and prevent actions that could jeopardize its credibility.

With the expulsion now ratified, attention has shifted to the next steps for both the party and the lawmaker.

Analysts anticipate that the situation may shape upcoming political realignments in Anambra State as the governorship race draws nearer.
