Senate Proposes 112 as Unified Emergency Number in Nigeria
The Nigerian Senate has introduced a bill seeking to establish 112 as the single, nationwide emergency number, enabling citizens to call or text during urgent situations.
Leading debate on the proposed legislation, Senator Abdulaziz Yaradua explained that the current use of multiple emergency numbers across different government agencies has created confusion and slowed down response times during critical incidents.
He noted that the fragmentation of emergency contact channels often leaves citizens unsure of which number to reach in moments where timing is crucial.
According to Yaradua, adopting 112 as the standardised emergency contact line would streamline communication, reduce delays, and ensure that reports of accidents, security threats, fires, medical cases, and other emergencies are directed promptly to the appropriate response units.
He emphasised that 112 is simple, easy to recall, and quick to dial, making it more effective for public use, especially in crisis situations where clarity and speed are essential.
The bill is expected to undergo further legislative consideration as lawmakers evaluate its potential benefits for national safety and emergency coordination.
