FG Shuts Abuja Quarry After Deadly Blast Rocks School, Injures Pupils
The Federal Government has ordered the immediate shutdown of Cornerstone, a quarry operated by Istanbul Quarry Limited in Dutse, Abuja, following a dangerous blast that sent flying rocks into the nearby Graceland High School, injuring several pupils and staff.
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) confirmed the closure in a statement issued by its Assistant Director of Press, Nwamaka Ejiofor.
According to the agency, the incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at a time when students were seated in their classrooms writing examinations.
Ejiofor explained that the blast from the quarry site propelled rocks across the perimeter, damaging classroom roofs, breaking windows, and causing injuries to students and teachers who were caught off guard by the explosion.
She added that the situation could have been far worse had school authorities not acted swiftly to evacuate affected areas.
NESREA officials, accompanied by security personnel, visited the site shortly after the incident and sealed off the quarry pending full environmental compliance investigations.
The agency noted that the company’s blasting operations appeared to have violated established safety standards, particularly regarding buffer zones between quarry sites and residential or school environments.
“NESREA will ensure that a thorough investigation is carried out, and appropriate sanctions are taken against any party found culpable.
The safety of citizens, especially children, remains our priority,” Ejiofor said.
Parents and community members have since expressed outrage, calling for stricter enforcement of mining and blasting regulations within the Federal Capital Territory.
Many described the incident as a preventable tragedy and urged the government to relocate quarry sites operating too close to populated areas.
Emergency responders confirmed that the injured students received prompt medical attention, with most reportedly in stable condition.
Authorities say the quarry will remain shut until all safety concerns are fully addressed and compliance with environmental regulations is guaranteed.
