Nigeria Police Activate Presidential Directive on Officers Withdrawal from Guarding VIPs
All police officers attached to VIPs and beats have been ordered to return to their duty Post by the Special Protection unit of the Nigerian Police Force in response to the order of President Bola Tinubu.
Recall that an order was issued on November 23 by President Tinubu for the immediate withdrawal of police officers assigned to VIP security across Nigeria.
The Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga shared a memo via X on Tuesday that all affected officer should report back to work before the close of business on November 24 as signed by the Commanding Officer of SPU Base 16 in Lagos, Neji Veronica.
The memo stated, “Sequel to the directive of Mr President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces on the withdrawal of police personnel attached to VIPs, the Commanding Officer directs, with immediate effect, the withdrawal of all personnel of SPU Base 16 attached to VIPs/Beats across the federation back to base.
“You are all warned to report back before the end of today, Monday, 24/11/2025, and all to attend the lecture parade tomorrow.
Attendance shall be taken from the nominal roll. This is for your information and strict compliance.”
According to the directives of the president said VIPs in need of special security protection will now seek the help of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps instead of police officers.
This Presidency explained that this new move would help boost the availability of police officers in communities and remote areas where citizens are most vulnerable and unprotected.
“Many parts of Nigeria, especially remote areas, have few policemen at the stations, thus making the task of protecting and defending the people difficult,” the statement said, adding that Tinubu wants police officers “to concentrate on their core police duties.”
Tinubu also approved the recruitment of 30,000 police officers across the country to further strengthen the initiative and plans are already in motion to upgrade training facilities in partnership with state governments.
