Governor Otti Activates Strategy to Secure Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced that he has activated a strategic plan aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following the court’s life imprisonment sentence handed down earlier this week.
Speaking on Thursday, Otti revealed that the strategy, which he described as a previously agreed diplomatic and political framework, is now being implemented in collaboration with other South East leaders. He said the plan had been developed during Kanu’s trial and is designed to achieve a resolution through dialogue and negotiation rather than confrontation.
“The groundwork has been laid, and now that the judgment has been delivered, the alternative resolution mechanism is being triggered,” Otti said, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could derail the process.
He emphasized that he has engaged “the highest authorities” in the country as part of the effort to secure Kanu’s freedom.
Otti also highlighted that the process is being conducted discreetly to maximize its effectiveness, while assuring that it involves consultation with “well-meaning Nigerians” and key stakeholders in the South East.
He reiterated his long-standing belief that political solutions and dialogue are more sustainable than military approaches in resolving separatist and security challenges.
The governor’s announcement follows widespread attention to Kanu’s sentencing, which has sparked intense reactions across the South East and among IPOB supporters. Otti’s move is being seen as a bid to channel these reactions into a negotiated outcome, potentially averting further unrest in the region.
While the specifics of the strategy remain undisclosed, Otti’s engagement underscores a renewed push for dialogue-driven conflict resolution in the South East, with the potential to shape future approaches to political and security disputes in Nigeria.
Further developments are expected as the plan unfolds and stakeholders continue consultations behind the scenes.
