Content Creator ‘Madam Oil Rice’ Arraigned in Edo Over Alleged Fake Kidnap Claim
A social media content creator known as Omoyemen, popularly called Madam Oil Rice, has been arraigned in Edo State after the police accused her of staging a fake kidnap story to gain attention on TikTok.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the 24-year-old creator sparked public concern when she posted a video claiming she had been abducted along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City. In the clip, she alleged that she was later “rescued” by police officers, taken to the station, and asked to pay ₦10,000 as bail.
The police later dismissed the entire account as fabricated. The state police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, said investigations revealed there was no record of her arrest or rescue on the day she claimed the incident occurred.
He described the video as “dangerously misleading,” warning that such false stories can undermine public trust and cause unnecessary panic.
Yamu added that during interrogation, Omoyemen allegedly admitted the video was staged solely to boost her online engagement. She reportedly deleted an earlier version of the clip in which a voice in the background urged viewers to follow her page — a detail police say further exposed the attempt to create viral content.
The creator was taken before a court on charges tied to spreading false information. The police used the case to caution Nigerians about amplifying unverified social-media reports, especially those that touch on security issues.
Her arraignment has stirred conversations about clout-driven content creation and its real-world consequences, particularly in a state that has battled concerns over kidnapping and public safety.
More updates are expected as the case progresses in court.
