Law Recognizes Only National Leadership of Political Parties, Not State or Local Executives, Say APC Leader

A concerned leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified that, under Nigerian law, only the national organs of political parties are legally recognized, not state, local government, or ward executive structures.

According to the APC leader, there are established precedents confirming that only the National Chairman and National Secretary of a political party are authorized to sign the official List of Candidates for elections.

The statement comes amid tensions in Ogun State’s APC, particularly involving Ward 4 officials in Sagamu.

The leader advised that the Ward Chairman and Secretary exercise caution to avoid actions that could provoke the dissolution or suspension of the APC Ogun State Executive Committee.

He also emphasized that those making uninformed political statements should note that the same National Secretary, Dr. Senator Ajibola Basiru, PhD, together with the National Chairman, will be responsible for signing the candidate list for upcoming elections.

The APC leader urged party members to avoid “playing the politics of desperation” and reminded that political positions, including governors, secretaries to the state government, and ministers, are temporary and can change with time.

“Enough said for the wise. Let’s avoid playing ‘God.’ A Governor, SSG, Minister, etc., today will become Mr. ‘Nobody’ tomorrow,” he said.
