Oshiomhole Backs Okpebholo, Denounces PDP Claims of Wasted Year
Former Edo State governor and Senator Adams Oshiomhole has defended Governor Monday Okpebholo, insisting the state was left “abandoned” by previous administrations and dismissing criticisms that Okpebholo’s first year in office was unproductive.
Speaking on Sunday in Benin, Oshiomhole responded to claims by the state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Okpebholo’s tenure had achieved little.
He described the PDP as a “dead party” that failed to deliver meaningful results during its time in office.
“I don’t understand why the media continues to quote a party that lacks credibility,” Oshiomhole said. “Journalists should rely on verifiable facts from events across the state rather than unsubstantiated statements.”
The senator highlighted several achievements of Okpebholo’s administration, including the ongoing flyover construction at Ramat Park, aimed at easing traffic congestion. He emphasised the economic benefits of reduced travel time and fuel costs.
“Road projects under construction across Edo State show the government’s commitment to development, not mere political propaganda,” Oshiomhole added.
On education, he criticised the previous administration for neglecting schools, leaving facilities dilapidated and understaffed. According to Oshiomhole, Okpebholo has begun rehabilitating schools, recruited 5,000 teachers, and restored a conducive learning environment.
He also applauded increased funding for higher institutions. Ambrose Alli University now receives a monthly subvention of N500 million, up from N41 million, while Edo University, Iyamho, receives N250 million. “These investments are strategic steps to resolve longstanding academic disruptions,” he said.
Praising the governor’s leadership style, Oshiomhole commended Okpebholo’s humility, decisiveness, and ability to enforce discipline in government. “Action speaks louder than words,” he said.
On federal matters, the senator reiterated his commitment to advancing Edo State projects despite his national responsibilities. He cited the Benin–Auchi–Okene road reconstruction, noting both he and the governor urged President Bola Tinubu to secure funding outside the annual budget. The project is now underway.
Oshiomhole’s remarks countered statements from Edo PDP Chairman Dr Tony Aziegbemi, who labelled Okpebholo’s first year “wasted,” accusing the government of policy paralysis, economic mismanagement, and stalled investments.
Aziegbemi also alleged the administration disrupted local councils’ operations, failed to issue Certificates of Occupancy, and dismantled EdoGIS, which had previously enhanced transparency in land administration.
