31 Nations Secure Spots for FIFA 2026 World Cup
A total of 31 countries have officially qualified for the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
This list includes the three host nations who received automatic berths, as well as teams that have successfully navigated their respective confederation’s qualifying campaigns as of November 2025.
The remaining spots for the tournament will be determined by ongoing qualifiers and the final inter-continental playoffs.
Portugal was the most recent team to secure qualification, doing so with a dominant 9-1 victory over Armenia in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday at the Estádio do Dragão.
The team, which played without their suspended captain Cristiano Ronaldo, saw goals from Renato Veiga and Gonçalo Ramos, with hat-tricks scored by both João Neves and Bruno Fernandes, alongside a goal from Francisco Conceição, sealing their ticket to the finals.
The currently qualified nations are distributed across five confederations plus the three host nations:
* Host Nations (3): United States, Mexico, and Canada.
* Africa (CAF) (9): Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Morocco.
* Asia (AFC) (7): Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Australia, Iran, Japan, and Jordan.
* South America (CONMEBOL) (6): Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador.
* Europe (UEFA) (4): Portugal, Croatia, England, and France.
* Oceania (OFC) (1): New Zealand.
The CONCACAF region still has all its remaining non-host spots yet to be determined by the conclusion of their qualifying tournament.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first tournament to feature an expanded format, including a total of 48 teams.
This marks a significant increase from the 32-team format used in the previous seven editions of the tournament, starting in 1998.
The expansion is intended to provide more qualification opportunities for countries across all six confederations.
The final two places for the 48-team tournament will be determined in March 2026 through a six-team inter-confederation playoff tournament involving teams from AFC, CAF, CONMEBOL, OFC, and CONCACAF.
