South Africa Set to Bid for Olympic Games, Eyes 2036 or 2040 Hosting Rights
The South African government has officially announced its intention to bid for the 2036 or 2040 Olympic Games, a move that could make the nation the first African country to host the prestigious global sporting event.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni revealed the plan during a press briefing on Thursday, stating that the government has begun preliminary consultations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is assessing the feasibility of a formal bid.
She noted that the initiative aligns with South Africa’s vision to position itself as a major player in global sports and tourism.
According to Ntshavheni, discussions are underway to determine the most suitable host city, with Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town being considered as potential candidates. She stressed that the country already possesses significant sporting and infrastructural assets — including stadiums, transport systems, and accommodation facilities — that could support hosting the Games.
“The Olympic Games represent not just a sporting event, but an opportunity for national unity, investment, and global recognition,” the minister said. “South Africa has demonstrated its capacity through previous large-scale events such as the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and we believe we are ready to take on this challenge.”
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has also confirmed ongoing engagements with the IOC to explore bid timelines and requirements. SASCOC President Barry Hendricks described the potential bid as a “historic step for Africa,” noting that the continent remains the only one yet to host the Summer Olympics.
Sports analysts have praised the decision as ambitious but achievable, given South Africa’s proven event management record and diverse sporting culture.
However, they cautioned that the government must address key challenges such as infrastructure maintenance, power supply, and cost management to ensure a sustainable and successful bid.
If successful, the bid would place South Africa among the ranks of major global cities that have hosted the Olympic Games and mark a significant milestone for Africa’s representation on the international sporting stage.
As preparations advance, South Africa’s sporting authorities are expected to submit a detailed proposal to the IOC in the coming months, outlining the country’s readiness to host one of the world’s most celebrated events.
