Digital Economy to Contribute 21% to Nigeria’s GDP by 2027 – Minister Bosun Tijani

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has projected that Nigeria’s digital economy will contribute 21 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2027, as the sector continues to drive economic transformation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Tijani made the projection during a one-day public hearing on the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill 2025, held at the National Assembly in Abuja.

The event was jointly organised by the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity and the House of Representatives Committee on Communication and ICT.

According to the minister, the digital economy has already shown remarkable growth in recent years, rising from a 16 percent contribution to GDP to about 19 percent as of 2025.

He expressed confidence that ongoing reforms and investments in digital infrastructure, innovation, and skills development would push the sector’s contribution even higher in the coming years.

“Our government is not focused on quick fixes, but on deep and structural investments that will sustain growth in the long term. This bill will unlock the private sector’s potential to achieve that goal,” Tijani said.

He explained that the administration’s broader vision of achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030 would be largely anchored on a robust and inclusive digital economy, which is expected to create jobs, enhance productivity, and boost Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

The National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill 2025 seeks to provide a comprehensive legal framework for the development, coordination, and regulation of Nigeria’s digital space.

Lawmakers at the hearing expressed optimism that the bill, once passed, would strengthen e-governance and foster digital inclusion across the country.
