Ekiti Government Awards N15 Million to Ikogosi Marathon Winners

 

The Ekiti State Government on Saturday rewarded winners of the Ikogosi 17.5km marathon with a total of N15 million, including special prizes for indigenous competitors.

The race, which started at Ilawe Ekiti and concluded at the iconic Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort, drew athletes from across the region.

The award ceremony, held at the resort, featured remarks from the Race Consultant, who commended participants for their determination and highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering a culture of sports in the state.

In the male category, Iliya Raymond Gyang emerged victorious with a finishing time of 57 minutes and 33 seconds, taking home N2 million. Francis James, who came second in 57 minutes and 44 seconds, was awarded N1.5 million, while Sadjo Ismael, finishing third in 59 minutes and 16 seconds, received N1 million.

The female category saw Blessing Shamboa clinching first place in 68 minutes, earning N2 million. Akusho Lydia Thomas finished second in 70 minutes and 12 seconds with N1.5 million, while Nvou Gyang Tanko, who placed third at 71 minutes and 15 seconds, was awarded N1 million.

The marathon is part of a broader initiative by the Ekiti State Government to support sports development, create opportunities for young athletes, and highlight the state as a hub for athletic excellence.

Organizers also emphasized the importance of including indigenous athletes in competitions to boost local talent and participation.

The event drew large crowds of spectators and was widely celebrated as a success, reinforcing Ekiti State’s growing reputation as a center for sporting events in the region.
