Maritime Academy Alumni 2025 Convention Targets Green Shipping, Blue Economy

The Alumni of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (AMANO), says its 2025 convention will serve as a strategic platform for innovation, policy alignment, and sustainable growth within Nigeria’s maritime industry — moving beyond its traditional role as a reunion event.

The convention, scheduled to take place next week at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Akwa Ibom State, will focus on the theme “Greening the National Blue Economy: Collaboration Towards Sustainable Sea, Shipping, and Maritime Education.”

AMANO President, Mr. Emmanuel Maiguwa, disclosed in Lagos that the three-day programme would gather industry stakeholders, policymakers, academics, and maritime professionals to address pressing issues around green shipping and environmental sustainability.

Maiguwa said the convention aligns with the International Maritime Organisation’s 2025 global agenda and reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and national blue economy initiatives.

“The convention goes beyond being a reunion to becoming a platform for policy alignment and innovation, reflecting AMANO’s commitment to sustainable maritime development,” Maiguwa stated.

He explained that discussions would centre on modern shipping practices, decarbonisation, and capacity building to prepare the maritime sector for a low-emission future.

According to him, environmental stewardship, technology-driven innovation, and collaboration remain the pillars of a resilient and competitive maritime industry.

Commending the Maritime Academy of Nigeria for its “massive infrastructural and technological transformation,” Maiguwa said the academy now ranks among the most advanced maritime training centres in West and Central Africa.

He added that the event would also assess the institution’s achievements and deepen partnerships between the academy and the maritime industry.

Chairman of the 2025 AMANO Convention Planning Committee, Mr. Agassi Peter, said the convention will feature keynote addresses, technical sessions, exhibitions, and networking opportunities.

He highlighted a joint session with the academy’s 2025 cadet graduation as one of the convention’s key innovations, noting that it would connect graduates directly with potential employers.

“This engagement will ensure that maritime training aligns with evolving global standards,” Peter said.

He added that shipowners, terminal operators, regulators, and logistics firms are expected to participate, while the event will also feature sporting contests and awards for outstanding cadets.

The 2025 AMANO Convention, organisers said, aims to strengthen collaboration across Nigeria’s maritime value chain and chart a pathway toward a greener, more inclusive blue economy amid the evolving global net-zero emissions framework.
