Women LGA Deputies’ Performance Would be ‘Litmus Test’ for Future Roles, Says Governor Bago

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has described the appointment of women as vice chairmen across all local government areas (LGAs) in the state as a “litmus test” for their future participation in higher leadership roles.

Governor Bago made the statement after receiving the 25 chairmen-elect and their vice chairmen, who are all women, at the Government House in Minna.

He explicitly stated that the women’s performance in their current deputy roles would directly determine whether more women would be given opportunities in governance moving forward.

He acknowledged the significant role women have played in the democratic process, adding,

“Most of the people who came out to vote were women. Women have been the ones oiling democracy, and as such, they need to be given the opportunity to participate.”

Governor Bago encouraged the newly appointed vice chairmen to be confident and not allow themselves to be intimidated by men. He urged them to be supportive and cooperative with their respective chairmen to ensure development is delivered across their local government areas.

The Governor concluded by promising that his administration would sustain its policy on gender inclusivity and continue to provide opportunities for women to participate actively in governance.
