Forceful Takeover of State Properties Now Attracts 10 Years Jail in Edo

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved a new law prescribing a 10-year prison term for anyone who forcefully or violently invades government-owned property, in a move aimed at curbing illegal land occupations and protecting public assets.

The governor also assented to a separate provision imposing a five-year jail term on anyone found guilty of selling or transferring state property without the governor’s consent.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo said the new legislation reflects his administration’s zero tolerance for corruption, impunity, and the unlawful conversion of public assets for personal gain.

The law also introduces stiff penalties for professionals, such as surveyors, estate agents, and legal practitioners, who aid or abet fraudulent land transactions involving government property.

Meanwhile, Governor Okpebholo has announced plans to begin local production of essential drugs in 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The governor made this known through his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, during an inspection visit to the Central Medical Stores, managed by the Edo State Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency.

According to a statement by the Deputy Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Friday Aghedo, Okpebholo said the government was committed to reviving the moribund Edo Pharmaceutical Company, whose facilities were vandalised during the 2020 EndSARS protests.

He explained that the revival would attract investors, boost local pharmaceutical production, and reduce dependence on imported drugs.

“Edo will soon become a hub for essential drug production, which will not only create jobs but also end medical tourism in the state,” the statement added.
