Wike Denies Endorsing Trump But Open to U.S. Technological Support Against Terrorism

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has been drawn into public discussion following unverified online reports claiming he expressed willingness to support U.S. President Donald Trump in fighting terrorism in Nigeria if provided with advanced security technology.

The statement, which circulated widely across social media platforms, suggested that Wike would back Trump’s proposed efforts to combat terrorism in Nigeria, provided the United States supplied the country with necessary technological tools.

However, no credible news outlet or official statement from Wike’s office has confirmed that he made such a remark.

While the alleged quote remains unsubstantiated, Wike has in the past consistently called for greater technological innovation in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.

In recent months, he announced plans to establish a high-tech security and rapid response centre in the Federal Capital Territory, featuring drones, digital surveillance systems, and advanced communication tools for real-time crime tracking and response.

The minister has also urged stronger collaboration among Nigerian security agencies and regional partners, stressing that technology, intelligence sharing, and coordinated strategies are key to overcoming terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes.

Analysts believe the online report may have stemmed from Wike’s earlier comments advocating for international cooperation in tackling insecurity.

In 2022, while serving as governor of Rivers State, he had urged retired Nigerian generals with international connections to liaise with agencies like the CIA to assist Nigeria in ending terrorism.

The federal government has not issued any official response to the circulating claim linking Wike to Trump.

However, political observers note that the timing of the rumour coincides with the ongoing diplomatic tension between Nigeria and the United States following Trump’s recent remarks threatening possible military action over alleged Christian persecution in the country.

Security experts have advised caution in interpreting politically charged statements on international cooperation, warning that misinformation could inflame public sentiment or create unnecessary diplomatic friction.

For now, Wike’s verified stance remains focused on deploying modern security technology within Nigeria’s own framework, rather than aligning with any foreign political figure or administration.
