Lawyer Cries Out to CJN, DSS Over Alleged Compromise in Forgery Trial
Human rights lawyer and activist, Victor Giwa has called upon the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the claims of alleged compromise in his ongoing trial at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court. Giwa is currently facing an alleged forgery charge before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie.
Giwa has filed a motion seeking the recusal of Justice Onwuegbuzie from the case, stating in an affidavit dated October 27, 2025, that he has “no chance of getting justice” before the court because the outcome is allegedly “pre-determined.”
The lawyer specifically accused Asabe Waziri, a staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), of compromising the case with the backing of individuals within the Office of the FCT High Court Chief Judge.
Giwa averred: “That I know as a fact that Asabe Waziri is fully supported by persons in the Office of the Chief Judge of FCT, and enjoys favour with respect to her cases in court.”
He further claimed that Waziri “has boasted repeatedly that this Honourable Court is arranged to obtain a conviction and use same as a basis for the withdrawal of my practice license.”
Giwa formalized his demand for external intervention in the affidavit (motion number M/13799/205).
“That I humbly and respectfully demand that this case be further investigated by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and Chief Justice of Nigeria, His Noble lord, Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun [sic].”
To verify his allegations, Giwa stated his readiness to undergo scrutiny:
“That I am ready and available to undertake a polygraph test to verify the veracity of my claims and the facts deposed in this affidavit.”
He also alleged an attempted settlement attempt where a Director of the Enforcement Unit of the FCT High Court supposedly represented Asabe Waziri and demanded N800,000,000 for the arraignment to be stopped.
The police initially accused Giwa of forging the letterhead of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Awa Kalu. However, Kalu himself formally distanced himself from the allegation in a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, dated May 30, 2025.
Kalu clarified that his letterhead was never forged and confirmed that he had never lodged any complaint of forgery or impersonation against Giwa and his co-accused, Bukola Ibitade. Despite this clarification, the police proceeded to press charges.
