Kwankwaso Urges US to Support Nigeria with Technology, Not Threats, in Tackling Insecurity

Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has urged the United States of America to support Nigeria with advanced technology and intelligence tools in the fight against insecurity rather than issuing threats.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, made the call in a post on his official X handle on Sunday evening, reacting to US President Donald Trump’s recent comments about insecurity and religious violence in Nigeria.

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, had designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged persecution of Christians, claiming that “thousands of Christians are being killed” by “radical Islamists.” The US president further warned that he might consider sending American troops to Nigeria if the Federal Government failed to act decisively.

Reacting, Kwankwaso cautioned against such threats, saying they could worsen divisions within the country.

“The United States should assist the Nigerian authorities with better cutting-edge technology to tackle these problems, rather than posing a threat that could further polarise our country,” he stated.

The NNPP chieftain noted that Nigeria, like many nations, faces complex security challenges that require collaboration and support from international partners, not coercion.

He appealed to the US government to explore constructive engagement with Nigerian authorities, including sharing intelligence, enhancing border surveillance, and supporting counter-terrorism initiatives with modern equipment and training.

Kwankwaso emphasized that strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism and banditry through technology-driven solutions would serve both nations’ interests, fostering peace and stability in West Africa.

His comments add to the growing reactions from Nigerian leaders and civil society groups who have criticized Trump’s statement as an overreach and a potential source of diplomatic tension between Abuja and Washington.
