Gyokeres Finds Form as Arsenal Defeat Burnley to Extend Lead at the Top
Arsenal strengthened their grip on the Premier League summit on Saturday with a 2–0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor, as Viktor Gyokeres ended his scoring drought to help the Gunners move seven points clear at the top.
The Swedish striker opened scoring with a well-timed header before Declan Rice doubled the visitors’ lead before half-time, sealing a comfortable victory for Mikel Arteta’s side. Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon in the summer, had endured a barren run of five Premier League matches without a goal and managed only two in his previous nine outings across all competitions.
His strike against Burnley was his first league goal since September 13 and his sixth in all competitions for the club.
The result continues Arsenal’s impressive form, with the London side now boasting nine straight wins in all competitions. Their defensive solidity has also been remarkable, as they have kept seven consecutive clean sheets during this run.
While their lead at the top could narrow after the remaining weekend fixtures, Arsenal’s current momentum underscores their growing belief in the title chase.
Arteta’s men have now won eight of their first ten league games, further cementing their credentials as serious contenders to end the club’s two-decade wait for a Premier League crown.
After finishing as runners-up in each of the past three seasons, Arsenal appear more determined than ever to reclaim the English title they last won in 2004 — and to capture their first piece of silverware since lifting the FA Cup in 2020.
