Challenges for PDP as AMAC Chairman Maikalangu Allegedly Joins APC

In an unexpected political development, unverified reports suggest that Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). If validated, this defection would deal a significant blow to the PDP in the Federal Capital Territory, while strengthening the APC’s local political framework in the area.

Sources familiar with the situation indicate that Maikalangu’s decision came after several undisclosed high-level discussions with APC leaders in Abuja. Although Maikalangu has yet to release an official statement, political observers speculate that this shift may be related to strategic planning for the upcoming 2026 FCT Area Council elections.

Maikalangu has garnered considerable praise for his tenure as AMAC Chairman, known for his infrastructure initiatives, community outreach, and social programs. His potential defection could indicate changing political dynamics in the FCT and further diminish the PDP’s hold on the capital.

An anonymous source within the APC remarked, “Chairman Maikalangu recognizes the importance of aligning with a party that shares his vision for Abuja’s development. His accomplishments are well-known, and he seeks to build on that success with expanded support.”

Conversely, the PDP has not commented on the situation. Party officials have not confirmed or denied the reports, leading to increased speculation. Nevertheless, insiders report that this development has created unease among the party’s FCT leadership.

Maikalangu’s term has faced its share of controversies. His election victory in 2022 was challenged in court, but an appeal tribunal later upheld the results, affirming his position as AMAC Chairman. Despite the legal challenges, he has maintained high approval ratings among residents and received a vote of confidence from the House of Representatives in early 2025.

As the political landscape in the FCT becomes more intense, there is keen interest in whether Maikalangu will formally confirm or deny the reported party switch. For now, both supporters and opponents are awaiting clarification on what could be a pivotal moment in Abuja’s local politics.
