Shinkafi Raises the Alarm Over State of APC in Zamfara
Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, has raised concern over the growing internal crisis threatening the party’s stability and electoral prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Shinkafi called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda , to urgently intervene and address the divisions within the party’s Zamfara chapter.
He warned that unless deliberate steps were taken to reconcile aggrieved members, the APC risked repeating the mistakes that led to its defeat in the 2023 polls.
According to Shinkafi, the major problem facing the Zamfara APC is the imposition of candidates and lack of internal democracy. He noted that the party’s previous electoral setbacks stemmed from sidelining grassroots members and forcing unpopular aspirants on the people.
“The APC in Zamfara is on the verge of collapse due to internal wrangling and factional loyalty to different power blocs,” he said. “We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past if we are serious about reclaiming the state in 2027.”
He urged the national leadership to establish a genuine reconciliation process to unite stakeholders across the state, including former governors, senators, and local party leaders.
Shinkafi emphasized that rebuilding trust among members and ensuring fair primaries were critical to restoring the party’s strength.
Beyond politics, he also linked the crisis within the APC to the wider governance and security challenges in Zamfara. He argued that an unstable party structure undermines effective leadership and the capacity to tackle the state’s worsening insecurity and socio-economic decline.
However, the Zamfara State chapter of the APC dismissed Shinkafi’s alarm, describing his comments as exaggerated and politically motivated. Party officials insisted that the APC remains united and fully prepared to reclaim the governorship in 2027.
Despite the denial, analysts believe Shinkafi’s warning reflects growing discontent among party members over alleged exclusion and internal power struggles. Many have urged the national leadership to act swiftly to prevent further fragmentation ahead of the next election cycle.
The APC lost the governorship seat to the opposition in 2023, a defeat many attributed to internal divisions and unresolved leadership disputes. With 2027 fast approaching, Shinkafi’s alarm may serve as a crucial reminder for the party to reconcile, reform, and rebuild from within.
