Nigeria, Algeria Parliaments Sign MoU to Deepen Legislative Cooperation, Strengthen Democracy

The Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Monday formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with his Algerian counterpart, Brahim Boughali, to enhance parliamentary cooperation and promote shared democratic values between both nations.

The agreement, signed in Algiers during Abbas’s working visit, aims to institutionalise legislative exchanges and collaboration in law-making, governance, and capacity building.

According to a statement by Abbas’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, the accord was anchored on the “historical bonds of friendship and shared principles” between Nigeria and Algeria.

It also reaffirmed the two parliaments’ mutual commitment to upholding democracy, the rule of law, and the principles of international law and the African Union Charter.

Under the MoU, both legislative bodies will deepen ties through official visits, inter-committee coordination, and the exchange of expertise and legislative best practices.

The two sides also agreed to establish a Joint Parliamentary Committee on Algeria, Nigeria Relations, which will serve as a permanent platform for consultation, collaboration, and policy dialogue.

Other key provisions include developing a joint framework for parliamentary capacity building, sharing legislative information and procedures, and strengthening parliamentary oversight to support national development goals.

The agreement further directs the Parliamentary Friendship Groups “Nigeria–Algeria” and “Algeria–Nigeria” to prepare a joint action plan to advance the implementation of bilateral parliamentary initiatives.

The MoU follows renewed diplomatic engagement between both countries in August 2025, when Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Algeria’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, pledged to deepen political, economic, and multilateral cooperation.

Both nations have now extended that commitment to the legislative sphere, with Abbas and Boughali describing the partnership as a step toward stronger African solidarity, democratic consolidation, and sustainable development.
