Senate Resumes Plenary, Sets Agenda on Security Summit, Electoral Reforms

After several weeks of recess, the Nigerian Senate is set to reconvene plenary on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, with a robust agenda dominated by national security concerns and long-awaited electoral reforms.

The upper legislative chamber had previously postponed its resumption from September 23 to October 7, extending its annual break by two weeks.

The delay, sources said, stalled deliberations on several pressing national matters, including bills and motions central to Nigeria’s democratic and security architecture.

At the top of the agenda is the proposed National Security Summit, expected to bring together key stakeholders in the nation’s defence and intelligence community to deliberate on the country’s worsening insecurity, banditry, and kidnapping crisis.

Also scheduled for debate is the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which seeks to address lingering issues surrounding electronic transmission of results, internal party democracy, and campaign financing ahead of future elections.

Lawmakers will also revisit the 2025 Constitution Alteration Bill, which aims to implement critical governance reforms, as well as the National Assembly Budget and Research Office (NABRO) Bill—a 20-year-old proposal designed to enhance fiscal oversight by providing independent, data-driven analysis of national budgets and policies.

An internal memo from the Office of the Clerk of the Senate, seen by reporters, confirmed that senators have been directed to prepare for “an intense legislative session focused on key governance, economic, and security priorities.”

According to legislative insiders, the leadership of the Senate, under President Godswill Akpabio, is keen on demonstrating renewed urgency in tackling insecurity, electoral credibility, and institutional accountability issues that have sparked widespread public concern in recent months.

Observers note that Tuesday’s plenary will test the chamber’s resolve to move beyond rhetoric and deliver on reforms Nigerians have long demanded.
