Nigeria Needs Committed Leaders to Progress, Not Just Democracy, Says Ex-Envoy

A former Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Professor Akinjide Osuntokun, has said that democracy on its own is not sufficient to address Nigeria’s numerous challenges, stressing that what the country needs most is committed, visionary, and accountable leadership.

Osuntokun made this remark on Saturday during the maiden edition of the Citadel School of Governance Dialogue Series themed “Nigeria at 65: Historical Reflections, Futuristic Projection”, held in Oregun, Lagos.

The former envoy explained that while democracy provides a framework for governance, it cannot guarantee national progress without leaders who genuinely prioritize the people’s welfare.

According to him, Nigeria’s democratic experience over the years has been weakened by corruption, poor governance, and a lack of national cohesion.

“Democracy alone will not solve Nigeria’s problems. We need leaders who are patriotic, selfless, and committed to building strong institutions and fighting corruption decisively,” he said.

Osuntokun, who is also a historian and public affairs analyst, lamented that the country’s political system often rewards mediocrity rather than merit and integrity.

He urged political leaders to adopt a developmental mindset, drawing lessons from countries that transformed their societies through visionary leadership and effective governance.

He further called for the strengthening of institutions such as the judiciary, legislature, and anti-corruption agencies to ensure accountability and the rule of law.

“Our major challenge is not the absence of democracy, but the failure to use it effectively for national transformation. We must move beyond rhetoric and focus on results,” he added.

The event, which brought together policymakers, academics, and civil society leaders, also featured discussions on Nigeria’s political evolution, governance reforms, and the pathways to national renewal as the country marks its 65th independence anniversary.
