Kano Received More Allocations in Six Months Under Yusuf Than My 8 Years, Claims Ganduje

The immediate past governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has sparked fresh debate after alleging that his successor, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has in just six months received more federal allocations than his administration did throughout its eight-year tenure.
Ganduje, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claimed that despite the unprecedented revenue inflow, the Yusuf administration has little to show in terms of tangible development.
“In only six months, this government has gotten more revenue than we received in eight years,” Ganduje said. “But what is there to show for it? What projects have been executed? Where is the money going?”
He accused Yusuf of reckless spending and poor prioritisation, contrasting the situation with his own years in office, during which he said his government had to manage limited resources prudently while still delivering on infrastructure, social services, and programmes for the people of Kano.
The allegation intensifies the ongoing rivalry between the two leaders.
Governor Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has repeatedly criticised Ganduje’s era, accusing it of leaving behind huge debts, abandoned projects, and unpaid obligations. Ganduje, in turn, has defended his record while painting Yusuf’s government as wasteful and underperforming.
Observers note that recent increases in federal allocations to states—boosted by the removal of petrol subsidies and exchange rate reforms—may partly explain why Kano is now receiving higher revenues than in previous years.
Still, questions remain about how effectively the Yusuf administration is deploying these funds.
With both sides trading accusations, the debate over Kano’s finances and governance is expected to continue shaping the state’s political landscape ahead of future contests.
