Oba Rashidi Ladoja Crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland

The coronation of Senator Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland marks a significant milestone in the traditional and political history of Nigeria’s largest indigenous city.
At 81 years old, Ladoja brings a wealth of experience in politics, business, and traditional leadership to his new role.
Ladoja’s background is rooted in public service, having served as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007 under the Peoples Democratic Party. His tenure was notable for both achievements and controversy, including a highly publicized impeachment that was later overturned by the courts.
A highly educated individual, Ladoja studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège in Belgium and is fluent in multiple languages, including French.
Before joining politics, he worked with multinational companies such as Total Nigeria and later ventured into private business, focusing on oil, gas, and shipping.
Ladoja’s ascension to the throne is the culmination of a 32-year journey through the Ibadan chieftaincy system.
He held various titles, including Jagun Olubadan, Osi Olubadan, and Otun Olubadan, before being crowned Olubadan.
Notably, Ladoja defended the integrity of the Ibadan traditional system in 2017 by opposing a controversial chieftaincy review introduced by former Governor Abiola Ajimobi, which aimed to elevate multiple Ibadan chiefs to “king” status.
He successfully challenged the review in court.
As Olubadan, Ladoja is expected to leverage his calm demeanor and bridge-building skills to stabilize Ibadanland and Oyo State politics.
He succeeds Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who passed away on July 7, 2025. With his wealth of experience and commitment to traditional values, Ladoja’s coronation is poised to usher in a new era for Ibadanland.
