Lagos Makes Reflective Jackets Mandatory for Night Riders

Lagos Makes Reflective Jackets Mandatory for Night Riders

The Lagos State Government has announced new safety measures for courier and delivery operators, making it mandatory for riders to wear reflective jackets and use visibility tapes during evening and nighttime operations.

The directive, issued by the Lagos Ministry of Transportation in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Bolanle Ogunlola, on Sunday, is aimed at reducing accidents involving dispatch riders and improving overall road safety.

According to the ministry, all riders operating between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. are required to wear reflective jackets, while delivery motorcycles and bicycles must also be fitted with reflective tapes or markers to ensure clear visibility to other road users.

“The government is committed to ensuring the safety of both riders and other motorists. This measure is part of wider efforts to enforce traffic regulations, curb accidents, and protect lives on Lagos roads,” the statement read.

The ministry warned that operators who fail to comply with the directive would face penalties, including fines, seizure of motorcycles, and possible suspension of operating licenses.

With the rising demand for courier and delivery services across Lagos, especially during late hours, authorities say the new rule is designed to balance efficiency with safety, ensuring riders can be easily spotted by motorists at night.

Road safety advocates have welcomed the move, describing it as a “practical step” that could save lives, though they also called on the government to complement it with improved street lighting and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
