British Couple Back in UK After Taliban Release

An elderly British couple who had been detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan for nearly eight months have safely returned to the United Kingdom, the UK government confirmed on Saturday.

The pair, whose names have not been disclosed for security reasons, were arrested by Taliban authorities in Kabul late last year under unclear circumstances. Their detention drew widespread concern, with rights groups and British diplomats pressing for their release through months of sensitive negotiations.

According to officials, the couple was freed earlier this week following what was described as “intense diplomatic engagement” between London and Kabul.

They landed at Heathrow Airport on Saturday morning, where they were received by relatives and government representatives.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said:

“We are relieved that our citizens have been released and are back home safely. The government has worked tirelessly, in close coordination with international partners, to secure this outcome.”

The couple is now undergoing medical checks and debriefing. Sources close to the family say they are “deeply grateful” for the support received during their ordeal but will not be making any public comment for now.

The Taliban, who returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, have repeatedly detained foreign nationals, often accusing them of violating local laws or visa regulations. Several Western governments have warned their citizens against all travel to the country, citing risks of arbitrary detention and limited consular support.

Observers say the couple’s release may be part of a broader Taliban effort to ease tensions with the international community amid its ongoing push for formal diplomatic recognition.
