Ebola: FCTA Intensifies Surveillance, Urges Residents to Remain Vigilant

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has heightened its disease surveillance systems across Abuja amid renewed concerns over the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), urging residents to remain alert and promptly report any suspected cases.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, the Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, assured that the FCT health system is fully prepared to respond swiftly to any potential outbreak. She added that the administration is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to strengthen early detection and response measures.

“The FCT is on high alert. Our health surveillance teams are on the ground across all area councils, while our rapid response mechanisms have been activated to ensure any suspected case is identified, isolated, and investigated without delay,” Dr. Fasawe said.

She urged residents not to panic but to take preventive measures seriously, including practicing good hand hygiene, avoiding unsafe contact with animals, and seeking immediate medical attention if they or anyone around them develop symptoms consistent with Ebola, such as fever, weakness, vomiting, or unexplained bleeding.

The FCTA also emphasized the importance of timely reporting, calling on health facilities, traditional leaders, and community members to cooperate with public health authorities in order to protect lives and prevent any possible spread of the disease.

Dr. Fasawe further disclosed that health workers across the territory have been placed on heightened alert, with refresher trainings and personal protective equipment (PPE) being provided to frontline staff.

While Nigeria has not recorded any confirmed case of Ebola in recent years, health officials say continued vigilance remains crucial, particularly given the recurring outbreaks in parts of Central and West Africa.
