UK Launches Dark Web Portal to Recruit Foreign Spies
The United Kingdom’s foreign intelligence agency, MI6, has unveiled a new recruitment initiative by launching a secure “dark web portal” designed to attract potential informants in Russia and across the globe.
According to the agency, the platform, codenamed “Silent Courier,” will serve as a secure communication channel for individuals willing to share sensitive information relating to terrorism, espionage, or other hostile intelligence activities.
The service explained that the initiative is part of efforts to expand its intelligence-gathering network while ensuring maximum security for those who choose to come forward. The portal is designed to shield users from surveillance and interception, making it difficult for hostile states or groups to track communication.
“Silent Courier is intended to give people living under oppressive regimes or facing personal risk a safe way to reach us,” MI6 said in a statement. “We want to make sure they know there is a discreet channel available if they have information that can help keep the UK and its allies safe.”
The Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), widely known as MI6, has also published step-by-step instructions on how to access the portal through its verified YouTube channel.
This move underscores the agency’s growing reliance on digital tools to expand its reach and strengthen covert operations in an increasingly complex global security environment.
The launch comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly with Russia, where intelligence activity between Moscow and Western nations has intensified since the Ukraine war. Security experts note that the tool could be a game-changer in how MI6 sources human intelligence, especially from regions where traditional recruitment methods carry greater risks.
By offering a secure digital entry point, the UK hopes to attract whistleblowers, insiders, and others with access to critical intelligence, while assuring them of protection and confidentiality.
