Church of Nigeria Approves Creation of 15 New Dioceses

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has given its nod for the establishment of 15 new dioceses across the country.
This development brings the total number of dioceses in Nigeria to 176.
According to a statement signed by Korede Akintunde, the Church’s Communication Officer, the approval was made at the Standing Committee Meeting held in Ekiti State between September 15 and 19, 2025.
The decision followed a series of evaluations and validation exercises conducted after the lifting of the moratorium on creating new dioceses in September 2024.
The Church has designated five of the new dioceses as full-fledged, while the remaining 10 will operate as missionary dioceses.
The newly approved full-fledged dioceses are Ekiti South, Kalabari, Lagos South West, Omoku, and Ozoro.
The missionary dioceses include Eket, Idanre, Ikom, Keffi, Nasarawa, Ogoja, Oyo South, Oyun, Takum, and Zuru.
Further details on the election of bishops, consecration, inauguration, and enthronement dates for the new dioceses will be announced at a later time.
This development is expected to enhance the Church’s outreach and service to its members across Nigeria.
